Sport and Physical Education

At Blockhouse Bay Intermediate, sport and physical activity are an important part of a balanced intermediate experience. We believe young adolescents learn best when they are active and challenged. Sport and Physical Education help students build fitness, teamwork, resilience, confidence, leadership and pride in representing themselves, their whānau and their school.

During their two years at BHBI, students experience a wide range of sporting opportunities, from regular fitness and classroom Physical Education through to interclass competitions, Western Zone events, sports camps and AIMS Games. Our programme is supported by staff, a dedicated full-time sports specialist teacher, and a school community that values active participation

Our tiered approach to sport

Sport at BHBI is organised so that every student has opportunities to participate, while also providing pathways for competitive athletes.

Tier 1: Whole-school participation

This tier is for every student. It includes classroom Physical Education, school-wide fitness, whānau sport, interclass competitions, and major school events such as Athletics and Cross Country.

This level is about participation, enjoyment, teamwork and building a healthy, active lifestyle. Students are encouraged to have a go, support one another and develop confidence in a range of physical activities.

Tier 2: Competitive Students

Tier 2 provides opportunities for students who want to represent BHBI in competitive sport. Students may trial for teams and take part in Western Zone competitions, Swimming Sports and Sports Camp.

A wide range of sports are offered across the year, including football, cricket, orienteering, hockey, volleyball, netball, rugby, league, badminton, touch, table tennis, athletics, gymnastics, softball, basketball and cross country. Teams prepare during lunchtimes, before school and after school.

Tier 3: Elite Athletes

Tier 3 is for students competing at the highest intermediate level. BHBI is a member of AIMS (Association of Intermediate and Middle Schooling), and students may have the opportunity to compete at AIMS Games in Tauranga.

AIMS Games is a major national tournament and represents the pinnacle of intermediate school sport. We send teams and individuals depending on the strength and readiness of our athletes in any given year.

Fitness and Physical Education

Physical activity is woven into school life at BHBI. Our school-wide fitness programme runs four times a week at the start of the day for 20 minutes. These sessions include a variety of activities designed to improve aerobic fitness and help students settle into learning.

Classroom Physical Education gives students opportunities to develop movement skills, cooperation, game sense, strategy, fair play, and confidence. Students learn how to participate safely, work as part of a team, challenge themselves, and reflect on their own effort and improvement.

Whānau competitions and interclass sport

Our whānau system is an important part of school identity and belonging. Throughout the year, students compete in major whole-school events such as Swimming Sports, Cross Country and Athletics. Each whānau has its own chant and colour, bringing a lot of energy to the school each year.

Interclass sport also gives students regular opportunities to compete, cooperate, and represent their class. These competitions help students develop teamwork and a sense of pride in contributing to their class culture.

Something for Everyone

Sport at Blockhouse Bay Intermediate is much more than participating in competitive opportunities. Through sports and Physical Education, students learn to show respect, encourage others, take responsibility, and stay resilient. These qualities connect strongly with our school values.

Whether a student is trying a new activity, representing their class, competing at Western Zone, or striving for AIMS Games, our goal is the same: to participate, challenge ourselves, and stand tall.
